£15,000 Arts Council award!
SBSA has secured an additional £15,000 from the Arts Council to support Kinetika’s ‘Thurrock 100 Stories’ project! This follows the successful £64,000 award made by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) in December 2015 and will help grow the Thurrock 100concept as it enters its second year.
The ‘Thurrock 100 Stories’ project
The HLF funded element will see Kinetika work with local historians and heritage volunteers, as well as 20 schools and 20 community groups from all over Thurrock, to identify and share 100 stories about the borough’s rich history. This work will help shape a 10-day community walking festival in July 2016 designed to encourage people to explore their local heritage, with the stories made available via the Thurrock 100 website and a new 100 stories booklet which will be published in autumn 2016.
The Arts Council award will enable Kinetika to introduce an artistic element to the Thurrock 100 stories project. Inspired by the 100 stories, Kinetika will use drawings submitted by school children to create 100 small silk flags, each representing one of the stories in the 100 Stories project. Children and members of the community will be invited to paint these flags at Kinetika’s studios in Purfleet in June. Leading choreographer Jeanefer Jean-Charles, known for creating mass-movement for spectacular large-scale events, will also work with teachers from all 20 participating schools to enable students to take part in a choreographed finale, with all 100 flags.
